How QR labels work for moving boxes
The concept is simple: each box gets a unique QR code that links to a digital inventory of its contents. When anyone — you, your partner, the removals team — points their phone camera at the QR code, they see a web page listing every item inside, complete with photographs.
No app installation is needed to view a QR label. The code opens a standard web page. You only need the app (GotItBoxed) to create the labels and add items.
How to generate QR labels with GotItBoxed
Step 1: Create a box in GotItBoxed and add items with photos.
Step 2: Tap the QR code icon on the box detail page.
Step 3: The app generates a label with: the box name, a QR code, the item count, and the GotItBoxed logo.
Step 4: Print it. You can print on sticker paper (Avery labels work great), regular A4 paper (tape it to the box), or save as an image and print later.
The standard label is roughly the size of a shipping label. There's also a mini label option for smaller boxes.
Printing tips
• Sticker paper — The best option. Print onto adhesive label sheets (available from Argos, Ryman, Amazon) and peel-and-stick.
• Regular paper — Print on A4, cut around the label, and tape it to the box with clear packing tape.
• Multiple labels — Print two per box: one for the top and one for a side. That way you can scan it even when boxes are stacked.
• Laminate for storage — If boxes are going into a storage unit for months, laminate the labels or cover them with wide clear tape to protect from moisture.
Why QR labels beat handwritten labels
• Legible at a glance — No squinting at smudged marker pen writing.
• Shows item photos — A scan reveals actual photographs, not just a text list.
• Anyone can scan — The removals team, your partner, your parents — anyone with a smartphone.
• Searchable — You don't even need to scan. Search the app for any item and it tells you which box it's in.
• Privacy controls — Password-protect sensitive boxes (documents, valuables).
Advanced: QR labels for storage units
QR labels aren't just for moving day. If boxes are going into a storage unit, loft, or garage, the label becomes even more valuable months later. Scan a box in your storage unit and instantly see what's inside — no pulling everything out to check.
GotItBoxed lets you tag boxes with a location ("Storage Unit 3", "Loft", "Garage") so you can filter by where things are stored.
